Alanna Lockward will be presenting work from the international screening programme BLACK EUROPE BODY POLITCS (Ballhaus Naunynstrasse,Berlin, May 2012). Centred on Black European citizenship and recent moving image and performative practices, BE.BOP2012 sought to expose the ways in which citizenship is increasingly linked to contemporary racializing practices and, hence, with the limits of humanity itself.

In this presentation, Alanna will explore some of the issues arising from the time-based ‘positions’ presented at BE.BOP2012, particularly in terms of their efforts to contest racialized fantasies of European citizenship though narratives of re-existence and decolonial aesthetics.

The Fayre aims to offer a platform for the different components of the community using Wormwood Scrubs Park. It stems from 5 students’ journey on a group project originally based in HMP Wormwood Scrubs. However, when this initial stage of the project fell through, we were amazed at how many people we had encountered working in and around the prison. For example, this included dog walkers, formerly incarcerated people and the local pony club. Our engagement with these groups has been incredible and the Fayre aims to show this amazing process by drawing in as many of the groups/individuals we have encountered on our fruitful journey into one place where everybody has a voice to represent themselves.

The Alternative Art College presents;

Education as Experiment.

Date: 17th May
Time: 10am – 6pm
Location: 47 Lewisham Way, Goldsmiths College.

The Alternative Art College is a non-profit education facility;

The AAC’s reason for being is to challenge the notion of knowledge consumers, to question the socio-economic role of education and activate a response. The AAC was a direct reply to the crisis in the higher education field of 2011/12. One year on, the College’s aim is still to engage participants in the process of education, to create the alternative now.

The ‘retrospective’ is a reflective event/symposium addressing how non-profit education is produced. Located inside the walls of the education factory that is Goldsmiths college, we explore the alternative to consumer culture. This offers the ability to redirect the conversation within the HE education field, addressing everything from teaching methods to the UCAS point scoring system. The event will include a selection of lectures, seminars and a common assembly to discuss pedagogy, art, politics and all things related to education. The outcome of this day long event will be an open source archive, as well as, a publication and touring exhibition.

Initially based in and around the Greenwich foot tunnel, the project incorporates and explores locations such as the Isle of Dogs and Greenwich, considering times of transformation for these sites.  This event is a film screening of material chosen and made by Rat & Squirrel.

A 24/7 marathon camp on artistic strategies in politics and political strategies in art 21 – 28/09/2012, Graz / Austria

The world is changing so fast that we can’t keep track: the rise of the populist right, financial devastations, fundamental destruction of educational and cultural structures, democratic uprisings, Islamic fundamentalism, threats of technological and ecological catastrophes – where to start, where to end? But what is the role of art in this race of events that we can barely follow, let alone properly understand?

We have learned that there are no easy answers any more. We don’t trust ideologies, even though we follow the ideology of capitalism. We know everything is relative. We replace critique with criticality, the political with the post-political, and capitalism with added value. But where the answers get too complicated, the desire for simple solutions is growing. And we – perhaps indeed leftist hobbyists – seem to have lost touch with a larger base. So we take the possibility of concrete truth as a working hypothesis and look for direct action, for concrete change and knowledge. For an art that engages in specific political and social situations – and for an activism that searches for intelligent, creative means of self-empowerment.

“Truth is concrete” is a 24-hour, 7-day marathon camp: around 150 artists, activists and theorists lecture, perform, play, produce, discuss and collect artistic strategies in politics and political strategies in art. All day long, all night long. It is a platform, a toolbox as well as a performative statement, an extreme effort at a time that needs some extreme efforts.

The grant programme – covering travel, accommodation and food – invites 100 students, artists, activists and theorists interested in artistic strategies in politics from all over the world to Graz.

You can apply by sending an informal letter including your personal details (address, phone, email, date of birth). Please provide a substantial C.V. and a comprehensive description of your interest in the topic of the marathon, especially focussing on your own work related to artistic strategies in politics and political strategies in art.

Give and take

steirischer herbst covers the costs of travelling to Graz (2nd class/economy, for ecological reasons preferably by train) and provides accommodation for 7–9 days (arrival 19–21/09, departure 29–30/09) in a dormitory- like sleeping facility (shared rooms) by raumlaborberlin on the camp premises. The grant includes three meals a day as well as free admission to all events of “Truth is concrete” (subject to availability).

In return, we expect all participants to stay in Graz for the whole duration of the project and to participate actively in the programme. Like any camp, “Truth is concrete” depends on the social responsibility of the occupants. Although we cannot provide hotel standards, we nevertheless want to make the camp a worthwhile experience together with all the occupants. Therefore, mutual understanding and shared responsibility, and perhaps some active help, will be appreciated, as well as possible involvement in or contribution to the programme of the marathon.
