The bus tour is upon us. Possibilities and limitations, familiarities and novelties, associations and singularities, sympathies and antagonisms: what strikes you first about these sites?
As an important first step in the formation of all four group projects we ask you, in this crucial period leading up to the selection of your final project site, to express and record your observations in the form of a blog post in the week following the trip. For some this may be a comment on one site alone, for others it may be a more comparative set of observations, for others yet again it may be a series of photos with comments. As is often the case with first impressions they are easily forgotten so however it is that you are moved, intimidated or excited by the prospect of producing something at these sites, we want to know and capture those first fleeting impressions.
So come prepared on Friday 21st October. Whether it is notepad and pen, camera, phone or tape measure; the task before each of you is to be present on the day, and to post in the days to follow.

David, you asked for us to share thoughts as every stage, so here goes: I have had a fascination with prisons for as long as I can remember and have recently taken a voluntary post at a prison near my home. Now this group project is here I find myself wondering if two prisons in a person’s life is too many.. Or just the right amount? Will the two experiences compliment or interfere with one another?
Kate, fascinating dilemma! It will be really interesting to see how you feel as soon as you step into your second prison – I reckon it will hit you straight away. Will it be that in volunteering at your home prison you have made particular meaning of your fascination, which means that a second is unwelcome? Or will it be that the fascination is still the thing which over-rides and hence two is better than one? You’re also in a great position to see two systems square off against each other; just as both prisons might now start competing for your fascination’s attention. All up, your experiences of Friday will make for a great follow up blog post – let us all know how you go.
Hi Kate, your comment about fascination with prisons is interesting. I have been thinking about Friday’s trip, and I do not know what to expect! In fact it feels quite weird to be walking around a detention facility. There is something about how our views will be towards the people inside, and how in turn, we would be viewed by them?
